Forty-nine Cancun beaches, hotels and other places were awarded the Blue Flag distinction by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in a ceremony this week.
According to Riviera Maya News, forty-seven of the destinations were renewed, meaning they have already been Blue Flag-designated places before this year. There were also two new sites added to the list.
Cancun Blue Flag destinations include beaches like Perlas, Chacmool, Marlin, Ballenas, Playa Delfines and more. Four hotels were also designated: Fiesta Americana Condesa, Live Aqua, Iberostar and Flamingo. Cancún Sailing is a Blue Flag-designated tour operator.
Cancun itself has the most Blue Flag-designated beaches and operators in Mexico, and is one of the highest-rated destinations in the world for Blue Flag certifications. Granted by FEE, they show that beaches, marinas and operators meet 33 criteria in categories including environmental education, water quality, environmental management and safety and services.
“Every blue flag that flies is the work of many hands, of skin that has been exposed to the sun’s rays, of an unwavering passion and only in this way, only in this way can we maintain these awards and today this benchmark not only nationally but internationally,” said Quintana Roo Governor, Mara Lezama.
