Following a record-breaking year of tourism in 2024, the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism shared strong mid-year results with increases in air travelers, cruise passenger arrivals and more.

Air travel is expanding, with new daily routes from Dallas to St. Thomas, and expanded winter service from Chicago and Boston coming this December. American Airlines added increased winter service from Chicago to St. Thomas, and announced a new route from Chicago to St. Croix beginning this December.

The number of air travelers is expected to be marginally lower than in 2024.

“We’ve reached the halfway point of 2025 with exceptional results that reflect the appeal and strength of the U.S. Virgin Islands,” said Joseph Boschulte, U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism. “This is a testament to the dedication of the Department of Tourism team and local stakeholders who together remain focused on sustainable growth, strategic partnerships, and cultural authenticity.”

Cruise passenger numbers, however, are rising. St. Thomas/St. John is expected to receive over 1.48 million passengers from 414 ship calls, which is 4 percent above last year’s total. St. Croix will host over 208,000 passengers from 86 calls.

Hotel occupancy has grown 4.3 percent from last year, and hotel tax collections have increased 6.7 percent from the 2024 April Year-to-Date revenue. The U.S. Virgin Islands is third in the Caribbean for both average daily rate and revenue per available room. Both metrics are over 30 percent above the Caribbean average.

The Department of Tourism applauds the islands’ national marketing efforts, including its partnerships with sports teams like the Chicago Cubs.

Signature events and festivals also continue boosting the island’s tourism; the Crucian Christmas Festival and St. Thomas Carnival generated over $5.6 million in earned media value and visitation, while the upcoming St. John Celebration is also expected to boost the islands’ popularity.
