Travelers checking luggage this summer will have a little more peace of mind, thanks to new features in JetBlue’s mobile app.
The New York-based airline has added two new ways for passengers to follow live updates of their bags’ whereabouts while in transit.
The first feature will allow passengers to receive real-time updates on the status of their checked bags through the airline’s app. The in-app alerts build on the current luggage status updates that JetBlue provides via email. Now with the new enhancement, travelers will receive alerts within the app throughout the bag’s journey, including when it’s loaded onto the plane.
The airline has also added new compatibility features to make it easier to share the location of an Apple AirTag or other FindMy network accessory that has been placed inside checked luggage. In the event that a passenger’s bag with an AirTag is delayed or lost, fliers can now share the AirTag’s location data with JetBlue’s baggage team. To share their AirTag’s location, passengers can generate a “Share Item Location” link in the FindMy app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. They can then provide the link to JetBlue’s team by scanning a QR code in the baggage claim area or visiting a baggage service office.
JetBlue’s team will use the link to help find bags inside the airline’s stations and facilities, and the temporary link will be disabled as soon as a customer is reunited with their luggage.
“We are constantly looking for ways to offer our customers a more convenient travel experience,” said Carol Clements, JetBlue’s chief digital and technology officer. “As part of our JetForward strategy, we’re focused on delivering the products and perks our customers want. This new in-app bag tracking feature, along with AirTag location sharing for baggage recovery, are designed to bring customers peace of mind when checking their bags with JetBlue.”
Dozens of airlines around the world have been working with Apple to add capabilities to share AirTag location data with their baggage teams or within their mobile apps. The popularity of the tracking devices, which are slightly larger than a quarter and provide live location data, has exploded over the last couple years.
