MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin became the 36th state to limit cellphones and other electronic devices in school Friday, when its Democratic governor signed a bill requiring districts to prohibit phone use during class time. The measure passed with bipartisan support, though some Democrats in the Legislature said controlling gun violence should be a higher priority than banning cellphones. In signing the bill, Gov. Tony Evers said he believes that decisions like this should be made at the local level, but “my promise to the people of Wisconsin is to always do what’s best for our kids, and that obligation weighs…
U.S. telecommunications giant Ribbon has confirmed that government-backed hackers had access to its network for almost a year before getting caught, according to a public filing. The telco giant said in a 10-Q disclosure last week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that a suspected “nation-state actor had gained access to the company’s IT network” as early as December 2024. Ribbon said it notified law enforcement and that it believes the hackers are no longer in its network. The Texas-headquartered Ribbon provides phone, networking, and internet services for companies, enterprises, and critical infrastructure organizations, such as energy and transportation…
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The campaign to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida is suing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration in the state’s Supreme Court, alleging state elections officials are trying to improperly block the measure from getting on the ballot in 2026. It’s the latest escalation in a yearslong clash between progressive organizers seeking to amend the state’s constitution, and the conservative governor, who in 2024 used state money and his political influence to successfully campaign against efforts to legalize adult personal use of marijuana and expand abortion rights. In a petition filed Thursday, the group Smart & Safe Florida…
Amtrak is encouraging travelers to book now for the Thanksgiving holidays for best prices and guaranteed seats before they sell out.The rail company reported that in 2024, more than 1.2 million passengers traveled on Amtrak during the Thanksgiving season. As a result, Amtrack is predicting record breaking 2025 travel due to double digit growth in early bookings relative to last year and strong customer satisfaction scores thus far. To meet increased Thanksgiving travel demand, Amtrak is maximizing capacity by adding extra cars to Northeast Regional routes between November 25-30. Popular destinations along the Northeast Corridor—including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York…
Amazon’s cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is on track to record its strongest year of growth in three years, fueled by the AI industry’s unprecedented demand for computing power. The business segment’s operating income increased to $11.4 billion in Q3, up from $10.4 billion at the same point in 2024. “AWS is growing at a pace we haven’t seen since 2022, re-accelerating to 20.2% YoY,” Andy…
The recent escape of several research monkeys after the truck carrying them overturned on a Mississippi interstate is the latest glimpse into the secretive industry of animal research and the processes that allow key details of what happened to be kept from the public.Three monkeys have remained on the loose since the crash on Tuesday in a rural area along Interstate 59, spilling wooden crates labeled “live monkeys” into the tall grass near the highway. Since then, searchers in masks, face shields and other protective equipment have scoured nearby fields and woods for the missing primates. Five of the 21…

The Equity crew was live at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025! Hosts Kirsten Korosec, Max Zeff, and Anthony Ha took over the Builders Stage on Monday morning to kick off the event with the question everyone’s asking: are we in an AI bubble? Between valuations that have tripled in months, $300M seed rounds, and $100B commitments flying around, the money is moving fast — maybe too fast. The Equity team broke down what peak bubble looks like, where the actual business models are (spoiler: a lot of companies are betting on AI data centers), and why some founders are betting against the…
NEW YORK (AP) — Aside from a shared mop of wavy, dark hair, Miles Mitchell and Zander Dueve likely wouldn’t be mistaken for each other. Neither would Christian Conti and Spencer Delorenzo, or David Arkay, Vincent Panetta and Dempsey Bobbitt. Yet they now call themselves brothers. The “Brothers Chalamet,” that is — connected by a passing resemblance to one Timothée Chalamet. Mitchell placed first, and Dueve, second, in the unofficial look-alike contest that saw thousands — including, briefly, Chalamet himself — swarm New York’s Washington Square Park last October. The rest, if ranked at all, fell somewhere behind them in…
