Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, is coming to your TV. On Monday, the company announced it’s introducing Gemini for Google TV, allowing TV owners to engage in free-flowing, natural language conversations with the AI. When fully rolled out, this expansion of Gemini to a new platform will bring Google’s AI to over 300 million active Google TV and other Android TV OS-powered devices. In terms of TV-related questions, Google suggests its Gemini AI could be used to help people with different interests settle on something to watch that they would both like, or to catch you up on what you missed…
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is banning opinions by professors in the classroom and some books and courses in a crackdown that violates the First Amendment, a law professor at the military school said in a lawsuit Monday seeking class action status.Tim Bakken filed the lawsuit in Manhattan federal court and named the school and its leaders as defendants. He said he wants to protect free speech and the right to academic freedom at an institution where he has flourished despite his public criticisms of the academy and the U.S. military.Bakken also noted in…
Departing passengers are being affected at multiple European airports after a cyberattack on Collins Aerospace, which provides boarding and check-in systems. The parent company of Collins, RTX, released a statement that said a “cyber-related disruption” had occurred to its MUSE (Multi-User System Environment) software at some airports but manual check-in operations could be used as a backup.Among the airports that have been affected are London’s Heathrow Airport, Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport, and Brussels Airport. “There was a cyberattack on Friday night 19 September against the service provider for the check-in and boarding systems affecting several European airports including Brussels Airport,” the…
NEW YORK (AP) — Pamela Anderson has nothing against makeup. It’s just that she’s been there, done that in her younger years. That’s why now, at 58, she’s attending fashion shows and film premieres with a blissfully bare face. It’s a look, especially for older women, that serves to plague and perplex. Do we chase youth (and relevancy) with a full face, or do we foster radiant skin and march on makeup free?“I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room,” Anderson told Vogue ahead of a recent show she attended during Paris Fashion Week. “I feel like it’s…
Few things generate as much data as simply observing the Earth from above. But Ryan Abernathey and Joe Hamman very quickly realized that all that data still wasn’t enough for their startup to thrive. Their data-centric, climate tech startup, Earthmover, would need to pivot. The pivot isn’t entirely away from climate tech, though. Instead, the company is shrinking the time scale, focusing on how climate affects daily life — in other words, the weather. “What makes a compelling use case for our platform? Data that change frequently,” Abernathey, Earthmover’s co-founder and CEO, told TechCrunch. “That’s where there’s a lot more…
It sounds like Bluesky is getting serious about giving some users the boot, with the company saying it will be doing more to “enforce our moderation policies to better cultivate a space for healthy conversations.” This is part of a broader update to the social media company’s community guidelines, after Bluesky asked users in August to provide feedback on an earlier draft of these changes. In a new blog post, the company said it received comments from more than 14,000 community members, and that it “especially heard from community members who shared concerns about how the guidelines could impact creative…
LONDON (AP) — When novelists look to the future, the view is often grim. There are a lot more fictional dystopias than utopias.Ian McEwan has good news and bad news about what lies ahead in “ What We Can Know,” a book he calls “science fiction without the science.”The British author’s 19th novel, published Tuesday in the U.S. by Knopf, is set in 2119 and follows a professor of literature researching a famed 21st-century poet and his circle. So far, so cozy. But it’s a world in which nuclear war, pandemics, economic collapse and climate change — a period known as…
Thomas Fuller | SOPA Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesPfizer on Monday said it would buy weight loss drugmaker Metsera in an up to $7.3 billion deal, including future payments, as it scrambles to win a slice in the booming obesity drug market. Pfizer said it will pay an initial $47.50 a share in cash for Metsera, a nearly 43% premium to the biotech company’s Friday’s closing price of $33.32. That gives the deal an enterprise value of $4.9 billion. The pact also includes a contingent value right worth up to $22.50 a share based on potential clinical and regulatory achievements for…

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has agreed to sell Italian energy company Eni more than $1 billion worth of power from its first fusion reactor. The power plant will be built outside of Richmond, Virginia, close to some of the highest densities of data centers in the country. The 400-megawatt fusion reactor, called Arc, is expected to open in the early 2030s, CEO Bob Mumgaard said. The Eni agreement is the second such deal for Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). In June, Google said that it would buy half the reactor’s output. When asked, neither CFS nor Eni would say how much power…
