Meta announced on Thursday that Vibes, its short-form video feed of AI-generated videos, is launching in Europe in the Meta AI app. Think TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every single video you come across is AI-generated. The rollout comes six weeks after Meta introduced the feed in the U.S. A few days after Meta’s launch, OpenAI released Sora, a social media platform for creating and sharing AI-generated videos. With Vibes, you can create and share short-form AI-generated videos and access a dedicated feed that displays AI videos from others. Meta says your feed will become more personalized to your interests…
Travelers wait in line at a security checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois on November 7 2025. Kamil Krzaczynski | Afp | Getty ImagesU.S. airlines started cancelling hundreds of flights on Friday, hours after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered the cuts amid the more-than-monthlong government shutdown. The cuts were ordered as air traffic controllers have missed their paychecks due to the government shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history. Air traffic control staffing shortages have been disrupting flights at several major U.S. airports, vexing travelers and airline executives alike. The sudden flight cuts this week forced airlines to scramble with…
Dubai-based air carrier Emirates has shattered yet another earnings record, as it reports its highest-ever half-year profit for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. For that period, the airline posted a pre-tax profit of $3.1 billion USD, which is 17% higher than in 2024. The earnings milestone marks the fourth year in a row that Emirates has posted a record profit at the half-year mark. The airline attributed its growing profit margin in part to “strong and sustained” travel demand across all of the regions where it flies.“Global demand for air transport and travel services has been buoyant, despite geo-political events and economic…
SpaceX is buying another $2.6 billion worth of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar, an expansion of a $17 billion deal announced in September, as its satellite internet business Starlink continues to win new customers around the world. The spectrum sale comes just a day after SpaceX revealed it has passed 8 million global customers. On Thursday, the company added more commercial contracts to that total. International Airlines Group announced it will install Starlink inflight internet on more than 500 aircraft across its portfolio, which includes British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. The additional EchoStar spectrum will be used to grow…
Sora’s Android launch is off to an auspicious start. On its first day on the Google Play Store, the AI video app from ChatGPT maker OpenAI saw an estimated 470,000 downloads across the markets where it was available, according to new estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures. That makes the Android launch more than 4x the size of the iOS launch, with 327% more installs (360,000) — but the firm notes that’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. On iOS, Sora was only available in the U.S. and Canada, and it was invite-only. Sora on Android, however, is available in the U.S.,…
The government shutdown’s effect on the U.S. air travel system is about to get even more noticeable to air passengers by the end of the week. The FAA has announced that it will cut flight schedules by 10 percent at 40 major airports across the country as the nation faces short staffing among unpaid air traffic controllers. The list of airports that will have reduced flights are among the busiest hubs in the U.S., including Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Forth Worth, Los Angeles, and New York’s JFK. Flight reductions will begin on Friday, November 7. Travelers should keep in mind that if their flight…
Executives at Ford are considering killing its flagship electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, according to The Wall Street Journal. The discussions are happening in the wake of Ford’s late October decision to idle F-150 Lightning production while it prioritizes hybrid and gas-engine versions of the popular pickup. The company’s been dealing with production troubles after a fire broke out at aluminum supplier Novelis’ factory in Oswego, New York, earlier this year. Ford introduced the F-150 Lightning in 2021 with a promised base price of $40,000. It started building and selling the truck in 2022 — although the truck wound…
OpenAI execs have been fielding plenty of questions about how they expect to pay for the $1.4 trillion worth of data center build-outs and usage commitments they’ve accrued this year, given that their revenue — while rising rapidly — is a $20 billion annual run rate, CEO Sam Altman said Thursday in a post on X. Altman’s comments came in response to comments made by OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar — which she quickly walked back. Speaking at a Wall Street Journal event on Wednesday, Friar said she wanted the U.S. government to “backstop” her company’s infrastructure loans. This, she explained,…
Amazon announced on Thursday the launch of Kindle Translate, an AI-powered translation service designed for authors using Kindle Direct Publishing to broaden their reach. The service initially translates text between English and Spanish and from German to English, as it’s still operating in beta. More languages will be supported over time. The retail giant noted less than 5% of titles on Amazon are available in more than one language, suggesting there’s a big opportunity for AI translations. Of course, AI isn’t perfect, which means it could introduce errors into the text. To address this, Amazon allows authors to preview their…
Google announced Thursday it is buying 200,000 metric tons of carbon removal from Mombak, a forest restoration company based in Brazil. The project will buy farmland in the Amazon and reforest it. The deal was made through the Symbiosis Coalition, an advance market commitment intended to develop a market for nature-based carbon removal schemes that is backed by Google, McKinsey, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce. Symbiosis Coalition is similar to Frontier, an advance market commitment also backed by Google and others that supports direct air capture projects. Nature-based carbon removal shows great promise in drawing down CO2 levels in the atmosphere,…
