Peter Williams, the former general manager of Trenchant, a division of defense contractor L3Harris that develops surveillance and hacking tools for Western governments, pleaded guilty last week to stealing some of those tools and selling them to a Russian broker. A court document filed in the case, as well as exclusive reporting by TechCrunch and interviews with Williams’ former colleagues, explained how Williams was able to steal the highly valuable and sensitive exploits from Trenchant. Williams, a 39-year-old Australian citizen who was known inside the company as “Doogie,” admitted to prosecutors that he stole and sold eight exploits, or…

Apple has redesigned the web interface for its App Store, making it actually usable for people who aren’t viewing the store on Apple devices. Before this update, users could see individual pages for apps on the web — which they probably found via a search engine — but there was no way to browse within the App Store. On a MacBook, navigating to an app’s iOS store page in the browser would prompt the native App Store software to launch. But on non-Apple hardware, this would lead you to a dead end. The new interface allows users to browse apps…
How much power is enough for AI? Nobody knows, not even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman or Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. That has put software-first businesses like OpenAI and Microsoft in a bind. Much of the tech world has been focused on compute as a major barrier to AI deployment. And while tech companies have been racing to secure power, those efforts have lagged GPU purchases to the point where Microsoft has apparently ordered too many chips for the amount of power it has contracted. “The cycles of demand and supply in this particular case you can’t really predict,” Nadella said…
Locket, a private social networking app for friends, has scored a win with Gen Alpha users following the launch of its latest feature, Rollcall. The app, which lets friends share photos that then appear in home screen widgets, first hit the top of the App Store’s charts in early 2022 by taking advantage of Apple’s widget system to form the basis of its social network. Instead of updates sent via push notifications, the app’s widget would update to show your friends’ newly posted photos. This, in turn, would drive engagement back in the app, prompting users to share their own…
Going forward into the coming year, the most pressing safety concern for US travelers is geopolitical issues, which are becoming more fraught by the day, according to Global Guardian’s 2026 Risk Report.“Simply put, geopolitics and geoeconomics are going to wildly affect travel patterns moving forward – and that’s a new phenomenon,” said Dale Buckner, CEO of Global Guardian, a global security and medical services provider. Because of ever-growing geopolitical concerns, Global Guardian, which identifies country-specific safety ratings, began measuring political stability as a tourism risk in 2022.In the last three years alone, “there have been more geopolitical and geoeconomic changes…
A Japanese trade organization representing publishers like Studio Ghibli wrote a letter to OpenAI last week, calling for the AI giant to stop training its AI models on their copyrighted content without permission. Studio Ghibli, the animation studio behind films like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro,” has been especially impacted by OpenAI’s generative AI products. When ChatGPT’s native image generator was released in March, it became a popular trend for users to prompt for re-creations of their selfies or pet pictures in the style of the studio’s films. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman changed his profile picture on X…

Lawmakers have called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Flock Safety, a company that operates license plate-scanning cameras, for allegedly failing to implement cybersecurity protections that expose its camera network to hackers and spies. In a letter sent by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL, 8th), the lawmakers urge FTC chairman Andrew Ferguson to probe why Flock does not enforce the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA), a security protection that prevents malicious access by someone with knowledge of the account holder’s password. Wyden and Krishnamoorthi said that while the company offers its law enforcement customers the…
PUSHKAR, India (AP) — India’s desert town of Pushkar, nestled in the arid plains of Rajasthan, has transformed into a vibrant festival ground as hundreds of camels, draped in tassels, colorful beads and flower garlands, are paraded and sold to the highest bidder. For centuries, the annual Pushkar Camel Fair has been a vital event for India’s camel-breeding communities, many of whom live a nomadic desert life and travel hundreds of kilometers from remote villages to trade their livestock. Potential buyers, traders and tourists from across India and abroad arrive at the fair, which is one of the world’s largest…
