NEW YORK (AP) — The publisher of a posthumous memoir by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre says it has agreed on a final draft with family members after they publicly objected to the book’s release.Surviving relatives of Giuffre had worried that “Nobody’s Girl” presented an outdated and unduly positive portrait of her marriage, which collapsed in the months leading to her death by suicide in April.“We worked with Virginia’s brothers and their wives to contextualize the narrative Virginia’s memoir presents, and we appreciate their support of this publication,” Knopf’s publisher an editor-in-chief, Jordan Pavlin, said in a statement Wednesday to…
Karen Hao, the bestselling author of “Empire of AI,” has watched OpenAI go from a nonprofit “laughingstock” to a $90 billion powerhouse chasing artificial general intelligence at breakneck speeds. Hao, who first profiled the company back in 2020, says early visions of building AI “for humanity’s benefit” were quickly overtaken by a familiar Silicon Valley mindset: Move fast, break things, and let scale be the measure of success. This week, Hao joined TechCrunch’s Equity podcast to unpack the direction the AI boom is going and who’s paying the price. Hao argues that, like historical empires, today’s AI giants rely on…

The new plane is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner outfitted with the airline’s new Flagship Suites business class and was delivered to the carrier on August 29. American has been expanding its 787-9 fleet this year, receiving eight of the planes since April. It has 30 more of the aircraft on order, all of which will also feature the Flagship Suites product. As the carrier continues to receive more of the 787-9 planes, it also means more routes will be upgraded…
This week on StrictlyVC Download, TechCrunch EIC Connie Loizos and StrictlyVC’s Alex Gove sit down with Adeo Ressi, founder of Decile Group, and Sarah Lacy, a former TechCrunch journalist turned entrepreneur, to explore how one of Ressi’s newest projects, VC Lab, has quietly launched over 800 venture funds worldwide, averaging $12 million each. In fact, while traditional media focuses on emerging manager struggles, the four talk about why small checks are becoming strategically advantageous in over-subscribed rounds, how accomplished professionals are locked out of traditional VC despite having unicorn angel track records, and Lacy’s theory that diverse manager networks are…

The Trump administration wants the United States to be the dominant force when it comes to artificial intelligence, and one way the administration hopes to achieve primacy is by bringing semiconductor manufacturing back to the U.S. To help with that transition, President Donald Trump has introduced potential chip tariffs and policies in recent months meant to bring more semiconductor manufacturing stateside. In late August, the Trump administration took an unprecedented step toward that goal when it converted an existing government grant, meant for domestic semiconductor manufacturing, into a 10% equity stake in Intel. This deal was structured to grant the…
BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge in Boston on Wednesday ordered the Trump administration to reverse its cuts of more than $2.6 billion in research funding for Harvard University, delivering a significant victory to the Ivy League school in its battle with the White House. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs ruled the cuts amounted to illegal retaliation for Harvard’s rejection of the Trump administration’s demands for changes to Harvard’s governance and policies. The government had tied the funding freezes to Harvard’s delays in dealing with antisemitism, but the judge said the university’s federally backed research had little connection to antisemitism. “A…
There are all kinds of movies that are either endangered or practically extinct. The big-studio comedy. The original musical. But the sweet and shaggy regular-people movie — more a province of the 1970s, always one that required a little hunting down — is a particularly rare breed.“Baltimorons” is one of those little movies you might stumble across and be surprised that it hooks you. It does so despite — or more likely because — of its complete lack of flashiness or any self-evident attempt to “hook you.” Instead, it manages that simply with low-key charm and a warm, unpretentious humanity.Director…
