WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump had opposed Israeli military action against Iran, favoring negotiations over bombing. But in the days before the strikes began, he became convinced that Israel’s heightened anxiety over Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities was warranted. After a pivotal briefing from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, on Israel’s plans and U.S. options for supporting its operation, he gave tacit approval to Israel to have at it and decided to provide limited U.S. backing. When Caine briefed him on June 8, Trump was increasingly frustrated with Iran for not responding to the…

Seoul, South Korea CNN  —  For the past month Chinese aircraft carrier strike groups have been operating further from home shores and in greater strength than ever before, testing state-of-the-art technology and sending a message they are a force to be reckoned with, analysts and officials say. Since early May, a People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) flotilla led by the carrier Shandong has conducted exercises north of the Philippines; its newest carrier, the soon-to-be commissioned Fujian, has been on sea trials in disputed waters west of the Korean Peninsula; and its oldest carrier, the Liaoning has led exercises in the…

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced late this week that it plans to streamline the Part 555 exemption process to make it faster for automakers that want to deploy self-driving vehicles built without human controls like a steering wheel or pedals.  The letter sent to “stakeholders” (meaning those companies working on AVs) is fairly opaque still. And manufacturers will still have to demonstrate that vehicles without traditional steering wheels, driver-operated…

Meta’s deal to partially acquire the AI startup Scale, giving it 49% ownership, is certainly unusual. What Scale officially announced is that the deal values the company at over $29 billion and that it will “distribute” proceeds to shareholders and vested equity holders (aka employees) granting them with “substantial liquidity” while allowing them to continue as shareholders. Meta is also hiring Scale’s famed founder CEO Alexandr Wang, who famously dropped out of MIT at age 19 to build the company, which offers AI training data verified by humans. This might sound like Meta would buy shares from existing shareholders, but…

Israel’s strikes on Iranian military facilities since Friday – including several nuclear sites – have resurfaced questions about how feasible it would be to destroy Iran’s nuclear program. A March report from the Royal United Services Institute shows that it wouldn’t be easy. It would require significant firepower and assistance from the US – and even that joint effort might face challenges in penetrating Iran’s key nuclear fuel enrichment plants, which are deliberately buried deep underground. These challenges, and the risk of escalating conflict with such an aggressive attack, is why it should remain “an option of last resort,” the…
