Intel officially announced an agreement with President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday afternoon, following Trump’s statement that the government would be taking a 10% stake in the struggling chipmaker. While Intel says the government is making an “$8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock,” the administration does not appear to be committing new funds. Instead, it’s simply making good on what Intel described as “grants previously awarded, but not yet paid, to Intel.” Specifically, the $8.9 billion is supposed to come from $5.7 billion awarded-but-not-paid to Intel under the Biden administration’s CHIPS Act, as well as $3.2 billion also awarded…
COLORADO SPRINGS (AP) — Administrators at the state university’s campus in Colorado Springs thought they stood a solid chance of dodging the Trump administration’s offensive on higher education. That optimism turned out to be misplaced. An Associated Press review of thousands of pages of emails from University of Colorado-Colorado Springs officials, as well as interviews with students and professors, reveals that school leaders, teachers and students soon found themselves in the Trump administration’s crosshairs, forcing them to navigate what they described as an unprecedented and haphazard degree of change. Here’s what the AP found: Students, faculty describe a culture of fear and…
Facebook Tweet Email Link Amsterdam AP — Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned Friday evening, after he failed to secure new sanctions against Israel over the war in Gaza. Veldkamp had informed the country’s parliament he intended to bring in new measures in response to Israel’s planned offensive in Gaza City and other heavily populated areas but was unable to secure the support of his coalition partners. The 61-year-old former ambassador to Israel told reporters he felt he was unable “to implement policy myself and chart the course I deem necessary.” Following Veldkamp’s resignation, the remaining Cabinet members of his…

Facebook Tweet Email Link A dramatic rise in Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries has sent gasoline prices in Russia to record highs, despite the government banning petrol exports to cope with the crunch. Ukraine is focusing drone attacks on refineries, pumping stations and fuel trains in an effort to hurt the Russian war machine – but also to disrupt daily life in Russia. Summer sees peak demand among Russia’s drivers and farmers for petrol. Ukrainian drones have struck at least ten key Russian energy facilities this month alone, according to a CNN tally of attacks. And the strategy seems…
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Administrators at the state university’s campus in Colorado Springs thought they stood a solid chance of dodging the Trump administration’s offensive on higher education.Located on a picturesque bluff with a stunning view of Pikes Peak, the school is far removed from the Ivy League colleges that have drawn President Donald Trump’s ire. Most of its students are commuters, getting degrees while holding down full-time jobs. Students and faculty alike describe the university, which is in a conservative part of a blue state, as politically subdued, if not apolitical. That optimism was misplaced. An Associated Press review…
Menopause can usher in a host of disruptive symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats and sleep problems. Hormone therapy promises relief. But many women wonder about taking it. That’s because the treatment, subject of a recent expert panel convened by the Food and Drug Administration, has long been shrouded in uncertainty. It was once used routinely. But in 2002, research testing one type was stopped early because of concerns about increased risks of breast cancer and blood clots. Concerns lingered even though later studies showed the benefits of today’s hormone therapies outweigh the risks for many women.“There is still a lot of…

Facebook Tweet Email Link Irish folk band The Mary Wallopers say they were muted at a music festival in Portsmouth, England on Friday for displaying a Palestinian flag during their set, something denied by organizers. “Just got cut off at Victorious festival for having a Palestinian flag on the stage,” the band said in a post on Instagram. “We’ve been doing this for six years now and this has never happened before.” “Free Palestine all day every day.” The festival organizers denied the band’s account, saying event management had cut the sound after the band “used a chant which is…

NEW YORK (AP) — For more than 150 years, horse-drawn carriages have been trotting through Manhattan’s Central Park, weathering the arrival of the automobile, years of criticism from animal rights activists and even a mayoral administration that vowed to ban the tourist activity. But now the influential nonprofit that manages the 843-acre park — and has previously stayed out of the debate — has now thrown its support behind a proposal to wind down the industry as early as next summer. The Central Park Conservancy argued in an Aug. 12 letter to the City Council that horse carriages have an outsized…
