I hate to break it to you, but just like your calendar can’t tell you the best time to harvest, it won’t provide you the perfect date to attack the pests waging war on your plants.Timing effective pest control is all about understanding how the weather affects insect life cycles. We know that most plants and insects emerge in spring, advance through summer, and, in cold regions, go dormant over winter. But beyond those general seasonal cycles, there’s no way to predict precisely when, for example, seeds will sprout, garlic will be ready for harvest or pests will be at…

Nicotine pouches responsible for growing number of poisonings of young children, study finds
Facebook Tweet Email Link Nicotine pouches are a fast-growing source of nicotine poisoning in young children, according to a new study. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio analyzed more than a decade’s worth of data, examining over 134,000 cases of children under 6 who accidentally ingested nicotine through products like vapes, gums, and lozenges. Most types of exposures fell after 2016. But one delivery method — nicotine pouches — shot up, rising more than 760% between 2020 and 2023. “It’s a high-concentration nicotine product, and it tastes good,” said Dr. Natalie Rine, director of the Central Ohio Poison Center…
Cloud-seeding startup Rainmaker is partnering with Atmo, an AI-powered meteorology startup, the companies exclusively told TechCrunch. The two operate on complementary ends of the weather system: Atmo studies atmospheric patterns to forecast weather events, while Rainmaker digests such data in an attempt to squeeze more precipitation out of weather systems. Under the partnership, Atmo will use its deep learning models to help Rainmaker identify clouds that have potential for seeding. The forecasting startup will also offer Rainmaker’s cloud-seeding services, deployed via small drones, to its customers. For its part, Rainmaker will contribute data from its proprietary radar system to determine…

A dream voyage across the Atlantic came with an unexpected detour for passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Star on Saturday, after a technical issue forced the ship to return to New York City just hours after setting sail. The 14-night cruise had departed from Manhattan Cruise Terminal at 4:00 p.m. on July 12, bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, with final destination of Reykjavik, Iceland. But instead of smooth sailing, the 2,348-passenger vessel found itself dead in the water in the Hudson River, having suffered a propulsion system failure that left it temporarily without power, air conditioning or running water. “It’s…
GM said Monday it is working with joint venture partner LG Energy Solution to upgrade its Ultium battery factory to make lithium-iron-phosphate cells for the automaker’s low-cost EVs. The factory’s overhaul will give LFP production in the United States a significant boost. Despite being invented and commercialized in the U.S., the vast majority of LFP cells are currently made in China. The $2.3 billion Spring Hill, Tennessee, battery plant is part of the Ultium Cells LLC joint venture between the automaker and Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution, a division of LG Chem. The factory began pumping out lithium-ion cells,…

Logan, whose address was given as Sydney, wasn’t asked to enter a plea and was ordered detained until a hearing next week. Police said that they were called to a “disturbance” at Perth Museum in central Scotland on Saturday, after reports of a kilt-wearing man attempting to smash the case…

That culminated in a US Supreme Court decision July 8 that, the US Department of Health and Human Services said in the email, means the agency “is now permitted to move forward with a portion of its [reduction in force].” “You are hereby notified that you…
