The views expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author. On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, I find myself holding two truths in tension: deep despair and profound hope. After more than two decades fighting human trafficking in the Philippines, I have witnessed both the unthinkable harm inflicted on children `– and the extraordinary progress made to stop…
The good news for fans of “The Bad Guys” is the new sequel is stellar. But that’s because a good portion is actually set in — are you kidding us? — outer space. “The Bad Guys 2” has clearly lost its moorings.Returning director Pierre Perifel, writers Yoni Brenner and Etan Cohen and the same voice cast have done what all sequels do these days — amp it all up like everyone is on molly, try to hit the same emotional notes and layer an insane plot with the fate of the world at stake. It’s hard to watch a franchise…

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has activated the state’s National Guard following a cyberattack on the state’s capital, Saint Paul. City officials have not yet disclosed the nature of the cyberattack, but the July 25 breach continues to disrupt city operations and some public services. Saint Paul is one of the largest cities in the U.S., with more than 300,000 residents, and is the latest in a list of major cities targeted by hackers and ransomware gangs in recent years. In a statement on Tuesday, Walz said he authorized the National Guard’s cyber forces at the city’s request to help Saint…
Most of what goes into U.S. landfills is organic waste, ranging from household food scraps to yard trimmings. That’s a problem because in that environment, organic waste is deprived of oxygen, which helps break material down. The result: the release of a lot of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.Consumers can curb their environmental impact by composting, which helps break material down in ways that reduce the release of methane. This can be done whether someone lives in a home with a yard or in an apartment without outside space. Composting also alleviates pressure on landfill space…

Facebook Tweet Email Link Thousands of microplastics so small they can penetrate deep into the lungs are in the air you breathe in your home and car, a new study has found. The particles are likely the result of the degradation of plastic-filled objects such as carpet, curtains, furniture and textiles and the plastic parts of car interiors, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One. “People spend an average of 90% of their time indoors, including homes, workplaces, shops, transportation … all the while they are exposed to microplastic pollution through inhalation without even thinking about…
As Silicon Valley races toward a future where AI agents do most of the software programming, a new problem is created: finding the AI-generated bugs before they are put into production. Even OpenAI is dealing with such issues, a former employee has described. Newly funded startup PlayerZero has created a solution: use AI agents trained to find and fix problems before the code is put into production, the startup’s CEO and sole founder, Animesh Koratana, tells TechCrunch. Koratana created PlayerZero while he was at the Stanford DAWN lab for machine learning under his adviser and lab founder, Matei Zaharia. Zaharia…
