With Monday’s release of iOS 26 Beta 2, Apple has fixed one of the more glaring issues with Liquid Glass, its divisive new user interface design for the iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices, announced earlier this month at WWDC 2025. The refreshed user interface modernizes the operating system’s look and feel with a design system inspired by the optical qualities of glass, including the way it refracts light and its translucency. However, early iOS 26 testers, somewhat unfairly, were quick to point out the flaws with the updated look in the early developer beta. Though the beta build is…

As dawn breaks in Israel and Iran, there is little clarity over a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump and when or whether it will come into effect and end the two countries’ 12-day conflict. Trump’s announcement came late Monday Eastern Time, hours after Iran launched a missile attack on a US military base in Qatar. As morning broke, Israel and Iran continued to trade strikes, with an Iranian missile hitting a residential building in southern Israel, killing at least three people, authorities said. Here’s what you need to know: Questions over ceasefire: There is little detail available about…
For about two weeks every spring, my letter carrier, delivery drivers and just about everyone else who walks into my yard comments on the deliciously strong scent emanating from the two lilac shrubs flanking the front gate. Most days, the breeze carries the fragrance all the way to the front door or even indoors if the windows are open. Not many flowers have that power. Some never did. Others no longer do, thanks to breeding that has developed bigger, prettier, hardier and disease-resistant plants at the expense of scent. Most carnations and violas aren’t what they used to be, and even…
Barbra Streisand was worried. She had just spent six days a week for six weeks recording the audiobook version of her 2023 memoir “My Name is Barbra” — which became more than 48 hours of discussing her storied, EGOT-winning career and the unexpected life that came with it. But now, it was time to record a new album with a stunning lineup of duet partners that ranged from current hitmakers Hozier and Sam Smith to legends Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and James Taylor. And when producers played the songs for her, she couldn’t sing along. Her mighty voice would just squeak.“My…

Andy Konwinski, computer scientist and co-founder of Databricks and Perplexity, announced Monday that his company, Laude, is forming a new AI research institute backed with $100 million of his own money. The Laude Institute functions less as an AI research lab and more like a fund looking to make investments structured similar to grants. In addition to Konwinski, the institute’s board includes UC Berkeley professor Dave Patterson (known for a string of award-winning research), Jeff Dean (known as Google’s chief scientist), and Joelle Pineau (Meta’s vice president of AI Research). Konwinski announced the institute’s first and “flagship” grant of $3…
