ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022. What started as a tool to supercharge productivity through writing essays and code with short text prompts has evolved into a behemoth with 300 million weekly active users. In 2025, OpenAI has battled the perception that it was ceding ground in the AI race to Chinese rivals like DeepSeek, all while the company has tried to shore up its relationship with Washington, pursued ambitious data center projects, and laid the groundwork for one of the largest funding rounds in history. Most recently though,…
Dictionaries define things. It’s their job. So when dictionary.com pronounced “6-7” as their 2025 word of the year, you’d think they would have, well, defined it.But no. “We’re all still trying to figure out exactly what it means,” they told us of this year’s “linguistic time capsule.”But that’s just how pop culture works, isn’t it? Who’s to explain why parents alone in their cars were suddenly singing “up up up” from that “KPop Demon Hunters?” song? Or why, in the Venn diagram of pop culture and zoology, it was the capybara that emerged victorious and beloved? Goodbye, Moo Deng. You’re…
The team at Retro, a photo-sharing app for close friends and family, is experimenting with how generative AI can be put to more creative uses. To try out the latest, cutting-edge AI technologies, the team built a new app called Splat, which lets you turn any photo into a coloring book page for kids. As any parent will tell you, kids love to color. And thanks to the web, there’s a seemingly infinite number of coloring book pages available for printing at home. However, many of the websites hosting these pages are filled with ads and other clutter, making them…
Still from Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”DisneyThe opening weekend for Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” was less of a blaze and more of a simmer. And that’s the expectation for the full theatrical run of the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. During its first three days in theaters, “Fire and Ash” tallied $88 million, falling well shy of analysts’ expectations, which called for a debut haul between $110 million and $125 million. For comparison, 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” brought in $134 million during the same three-day period.Internationally, the film collected $257 million, bringing the film’s global opening…
One year ago, Rome’s Trevi Fountain reopened after a three-month renovation. The 18th Century fountain, one of the city’s most iconic attractions, was made famous in films such as Three Coins in the Fountain, La Dolce Vita, and Roman Holiday. But in the face of overtourism across much of Europe, the city is instituting a 2 Euro fee (roughly $2.35) to get close to the fountain during daylight hours. The fee will be implemented starting on February 1, 2026.Deutsche Welle has reported that Roman residents will still be able to visit the fountain for free, and visitors can still see…
MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) — Over the course of a steaming-hot Southern lunch, served family-style on a giant lazy Susan, restaurant owner Andre Davis has watched people go from perfect strangers to lifelong friends. His restaurant, The Dinner Bell in McComb, Mississippi, consists of just four tables. Large and circular, they seat upward of 15 people. In the center of each is a lazy Susan dotted with heaping platters of food, spinning back and forth as customers pile up their plates. On any given day, anyone could be sitting around the table. Davis’ customer base ranges from European tourists to locals.…
