BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — Parents at a preschool in a Portland suburb are reeling after immigration officers arrested a father in front of the school during morning drop-off hours, breaking his car window to detain him in front of children, families and staffers.“I feel like a day care, which is where young children are taken care of, should be a safe place,” Natalie Berning said after dropping off her daughter at the Montessori in Beaverton on Friday morning. “Not only is it traumatizing for the family, it’s traumatizing for all the other children as well.”Mahdi Khanbabazadeh, a 38-year-old chiropractor and…
Congo and Rwanda-backed rebels sign declaration of principles for a permanent ceasefire in the east
AP — Congo and Rwanda-backed rebels on Saturday signed a declaration of principles in Qatar to end decades-long fighting in eastern Congo that commits them to a permanent ceasefire and a comprehensive peace agreement to be signed in one month. A final peace deal is to be signed no later than August 18, and it “shall align with the Peace Agreement between Congo and Rwanda” facilitated by the US in June, according to a copy of the declaration seen by The Associated Press. The agreement of principles touches on most of the highlights of the peace deal Congo and Rwanda…
AI is being forced on us in pretty much every facet of life, from phones and apps to search engines and even drive-throughs, for some reason. The fact that we’re now getting web browsers with baked-in AI assistants and chatbots shows that the way some people are using the internet to seek out and consume information today is very different from even a few years ago. But AI tools are more and more asking for gross levels of access to your personal data under the guise of needing it to work. This kind of access is not normal, nor should…

Kesha — yes, “brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack” Kesha — is now a startup founder. But if you think her journey from raunchy pop star to CEO is unexpected, then you haven’t been paying attention. Kesha has always embraced contradictions. She exploded onto the pop scene in 2010 with irreverent ear candy like “Blah Blah Blah” and “TiK ToK,” stylizing her name with a dollar sign despite throwing shade at the egregious wealth of Hollywood. She didn’t let people dismiss her as a one-dimensional, glitter-clad party girl. As beleaguered high schoolers studied for exams amid Kesha’s rise…
A startup called Pig.dev that participated in Y Combinator’s Winter 2025 batch was working on a potentially revolutionary idea: AI agentic tech to control a Microsoft Windows desktop. But in May, the founder announced he was abandoning the tech and pivoting his company to something entirely different: Muscle Mem, a cache system for AI agents that allows them to offload repeatable tasks. An early-stage YC company pivoting is nothing out of the ordinary, of course. What’s interesting — and what sparked a dynamic conversation on Thursday’s Y Combinator podcast — is that Pig was working on computer use, one of…
Benchmark in talks to lead Series A for Greptile, valuing AI-code reviewer at $180M, sources say
Greptile, an AI-powered code review startup, is in the process of raising a Series A. Sources familiar with the deal tell TechCrunch it’s for $30 million at a $180 million valuation led by Benchmark partner Eric Vishria. But one person says that the deal hasn’t closed and terms may change. Founded by Dasksh Gupta after he graduated from Georgia Tech in 2023, the startup went through Y Combinator in the winter of 2024 cohort, and raised a $4 million seed round led by Initialized Capital after completing its program. Gupta told TechCrunch last year that the bot his company developed…
CNN — When they wanted, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon could be warm and caring parents. A family judge described interactions with their children as “excellent,” with the two able to act in a “loving and attentive manner.” But a high-profile court case that stunned even seasoned legal figures painted a different picture, of a couple so fixated on each other and suspicious of outside authority they failed to care for their own child. This week, Marten and Gordon were found guilty of manslaughter after their newborn daughter, Victoria, was found dead in a grocery bag inside a disused shed. They will…
