It reminds Americans to avoid travel to the Caribbean destination due to a variety of threats, among them kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest and limited health care. “In July 2023, the Department of State ordered nonemergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the country due to security risks,” according to the State Department. “Haiti has been under a State of Emergency since March 2024. Crimes involving firearms are common in Haiti.…
Rex Salisbury, the solo GP behind Cambrian Ventures, fondly recalls the time he fell in love with fintech. The year was 2015; he had recently left his job as an investment banker to try his hand at engineering at a mortgage startup in San Francisco. “That’s when you had companies like Stripe, Plaid, Credit Karma, Wealthfront starting to scale,” he told TechCrunch. “Lending Club had just done their IPO, and was trading really well.” Investors’ excitement for fintech grew exponentially in the following years, reaching a fever pitch in 2021. Things calmed down noticeably a year later, however, as interest…
The new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” pretty much follows the plot of the 1997 film of the same name: A bunch of well-to-do young people get stalked and killed by a vengeful killer in a rain slicker with an ice hook. It even has some of the same stars.“It’s 1997 all over again. It’s so nostalgic,” says Freddie Prinze Jr., who stars in both, this time around. Responds another returning star, Jennifer Love Hewitt: “Nostalgia is overrated.” Freddie Prinze Jr., right, a cast member in “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” poses with his wife, Sarah…

Via, the transit software startup that garnered attention for its consumer-facing on-demand shuttle service, said it has filed confidentially for an initial public offering. Via has been batting around plans for an IPO for years. The company filed confidentially for an IPO in 2021, but never took the next official and regulatory steps to enter the public markets. Now, the company says it’s ready. Its status as a confidential filing, however, leaves lots of missing details, including the number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined. When Via launched…
CNN — Moscow barreled hundreds of drones toward four key regions in Ukraine overnight, just as lawmakers in Kyiv scrambled to approve additional defense spending against the backdrop of intensified Russian attacks over the past few days. The Kremlin unleashed 400 long-range drones and one missile late Tuesday, according to Ukraine’s Air Force – in what marked largest onslaught so far this week. Kyiv’s forces intercepted or disabled at least 345 of those drones. Russia’s strikes pelted multiple cities late Tuesday – including parts of the Odesa region, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih. Ukrainian…
Justin Timberlake had “Trolls.” Rihanna has “Smurfs.” Now, we patiently await a “Gummi Bears” with the Biebs. But first we have “Smurfs,” which, like “Trolls,” gets as much mileage as it can from its pop singer-voice actor. Rihanna voices Smurfette and supplies a new song, giving a half-hearted injection of star power to an otherwise uninspired, modestly scaled, kiddo-friendly cartoon feature.“Smurfs,” directed by Chris Miller ( “Puss in Boots,” “Shrek the Third”), cribs heavily from the “Trolls” playbook. Both feature brightly colored little forest creatures that like a good tune. In the opening of “Smurfs,” Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is DJing…

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sent letters to Faraday Future founder Jia Yueting and president Jerry Wang, alerting them that they may soon face enforcement actions from the agency as the result of a three-year fraud investigation. The letters, known as “Wells Notices,” state that the commission’s staff has made an internal determination to recommend an enforcement action against the electric vehicle company, the two executives, and two former employees who weren’t named, according to a regulatory filing published Wednesday. Faraday Future wrote in the filing that the SEC is focused on “purported false and misleading statements” related…
