The Earth is awash in data about itself. Every day, satellites capture around 100 terabytes of imagery. But making sense of it isn’t always easy. Seemingly simple questions can be fiendishly complex to answer. Take this question that is of vital economic importance to California: How many fire breaks does the state have that might stop a wildfire in its tracks, and how have they changed since the last fire season? “Originally, you’d have a person look at pictures. And that only scales so far,” Nathaniel Manning, co-founder and CEO of LGND, told TechCrunch. In recent years, neural networks have…
CNN — An Ukrainian Security Service officer was shot dead in Kyiv on Thursday morning in what authorities told CNN was an apparent assassination. A spokesperson for the service told CNN that an SBU officer was killed in Kyiv and that investigation into the assassination was underway. The SBU did not release any further details about the officer’s identity. Silent CCTV footage purportedly showing the attack was shared on local Telegram channels. CNN cannot independently verify the footage, but its location matches official photographs from the scene released by Kyiv Police. The clip shows a man walking out of an…

Bedford’s appointment was applauded by Republicans who say he brings valuable industry experience thanks to his role as CEO of Republic Airways. There were also many vocal opponents of Bedford’s appointment. In advance of today’s Senate…
Elon Musk said in a post on X early Thursday morning that Grok, the chatbot from his AI company, xAI, will be coming to Tesla vehicles “very soon.” “Next week at the latest,” he said. The news that Grok would be coming to Tesla vehicles soon comes several hours after xAI debuted the latest flagship AI model, Grok 4. Fans had wondered loudly why Musk spent an hour late on Wednesday talking about Grok with no mention of a Tesla integration, which likely prompted the billionaire’s early morning announcement. The update also comes as adjustments to Grok have made the…
CNN — For the past two years, summer in Spain has meant prominent protests against tourism: holidaymakers being drenched by angry locals armed with water pistols in Barcelona and protesters marching under banners proclaiming “Your paradise is our nightmare” in the Balearic Islands regularly make headlines as the saturation of the summer season gets underway. Tourism is a pillar of Spain’s economy, contributing over 12% to the national GDP. But in destinations where cruise ships constantly spill out crowds and Airbnb-style rentals in city centers exacerbate a housing crisis that helped push residents to the outskirts of their own hometowns,…
NEW YORK (AP) — Stephen King has a rule for anyone wanting to adapt one of his books for the big or small screen. It’s basically the Hippocratic oath for intellectual property — first, do no harm.“When you deviate from the story that I wrote, you do so at your own risk,” he says in a recent interview from his home in Maine. “I know what I’m doing and I’m not sure that screenwriters always do or that producers and directors always do.” Not everyone has listened to King, who has enjoyed hit adaptations — “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Stand By…

U.K. authorities confirmed on Thursday they had arrested four individuals for allegedly carrying out a series of hacks earlier this year targeting the British retail sector, including Marks & Spencer, Harrods, and the Co-op. The suspects weren’t named, but were taken into custody in relation to the hacks, the NCA said. Starting in April, hackers started breaking in and…
Critics slam Mexico’s gentrification protests as xenophobic. Activists say they’re fighting for their human rights
CNN — The words “Get out of Mexico” are still visible on one shop window as protestors violently kicked in the glass pane. In another clip, “Kill a gringo” is spray-painted on a wall in Mexico City as demonstrators carried placards demanding western foreigners “stop stealing our home.” These were some of the striking scenes at a mass protest last week against gentrification and the rising cost of living in the Mexican capital city, which some have blamed on an influx of foreigners from the United States and Europe. While the demonstration was largely peaceful and reflected growing anger about…
