Pride month in June and LGBTQ+ history month in October may be great times to immerse oneself in queer culture, but travelers can easily tap into rich LGBTQ+ history and life year-round when they sign up for a city tour.
Multi-day, guided LGBTQ+ vacations and tours are available in many destinations, of course. But city tours — which often last for just a few hours or a full day — offer a perfect alternative for those who want to connect with the community’s history, culture and traditions but don’t have the time or budget for a longer program.
I’ve taken full- and half-day city tours in several destinations and find them to be fascinating, fun and moving experiences (and local tour guides can also be ideal sources of recommendations for everything from restaurants and museums to shopping and nightlife).
Here’s a look at some of the most interesting and noteworthy LGBTQ+ city tours today.

In San Francisco, Cruisin’ the Castro Walking Tours leads small groups through one of the world’s most legendary LGBTQ+ neighborhoods—the Castro—with insight about everything from Gold Rush–era queer history to Harvey Milk’s legacy. New York City
The West Village is synonymous with queer history, and Christopher Street Tours’ Village Pride Walking Tour goes deeper, with stops at legendary landmarks like the Stonewall Inn as well as lesser-known places.
Another option is offered by ToursByLocals; its Pride of New York: Fabulous Highlights Walking Tour weaves in stories of ballroom culture, protest history, and community triumphs. Moxy Hotels, meanwhile, has forged a partnership with Pride Tours NYC to offer guests at its New York City properties free access to a 1.5-hour Pride Walking Tour.
