Condor Airways flight DE3665 heading to Düsseldorf, Germany was forced into making an emergency landing in Brindisi, Italy shortly after taking off from Corfu, Greece when one of its engines caught fire in mid-air.
Video footage of the event quickly gained traction online, as the plane, which carried 270 passengers, had one of its engines catch fire.
According to the Free Press Journal in India, the incident happened on a Boeing 757-300 aircraft on August 16 as the plane was flying over Corfu’s port, just after takeoff at around 8:00 p.m. People on the ground were able to see the flames on the aircraft’s right engine, which they were quick to record and post to social media.
The pilot, however, did not return to Corfu, instead flying to Brindisi, where the aircraft landed and emergency crews responded. Nobody was injured during the event, and the passengers were given accommodations and rebooked on a flight to their destination the next day.
Condor Airways commented, saying, “We apologize for any inconvenience, but passenger safety is our top priority at any given time.”
The cause of the engine fire is unknown, but is likely to prompt an investigation.
