The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating after a United Express plane skidded off the runway upon landing at Virginia’s Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport on Wednesday night.
The flight, which was being operated by CommuteAir and traveling from Washington Dulles International Airport, was carrying 50 passengers and three crew members when it ran off the runway around 9:18 p.m. local time, forcing the airport to temporarily shut down, according to local authorities.
“Tail number N21129 was landing and did not provide enough braking distance to bring the plane to a stop and continued off the end of the paved runway onto the emergency stopping equipment,” the Virginia State Police said in a statement to USA Today.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported and passengers were shuttled to the terminal. The airport later reopened and has since resumed normal operations.
“We are working closely with local authorities and airport personnel to gather more information and support our passengers and crew,” CommuteAir said in a statement to USA Today.
