Last Monday, a sudden wind squall added some drama to the Celebrity Edge’s visit to the port of Juneau, Alaska. The ship was docked when roughly 60 mph wind gusts in mid-afternoon caused the Edge’s moorings to break loose, and the ship drifted away from the dock. Footage was captured from the shore by tourists.
Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity Cruises’ parent company, explained that, “Our Captain maneuvered the ship back to the dock where passengers and crew boarded to resume the scheduled itinerary.”
No one was injured in the incident and there was no damage to the Edge, nor other nearby ships.
“The vessel drifted northward in Gastineau Channel toward another cruise ship, the Carnival Luminosa, which was already weighing anchor to depart Juneau,” said Lieutenant Matt Naylor, the public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard sector covering Southeast Alaska.
Several weeks ago, a similar event happened in Sicily to the Norwegian Epic, but there, a passenger on the gangway fell into the water as a result. The guest suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Luckily, no such incidents happened this week in Juneau.
Coast Guard Sector Southeast Alaska said that it was investigating the incident and put out a call on its Facebook page, requesting additional eyewitness video of the event.
